SIRARI, TANZANIA – November 17, 2025 – An international incident unfolded at the Kenya–Tanzania border crossing at Sirari on Sunday, November 16, following the arrest of a dual citizen who serves as a Sergeant in the United States Army.
The Tarime-Rorya Regional Police Commander (RPC) issued a press release today confirming the detention of Charles Onkuri Ongeta, a 30-year-old man holding both Kenyan and U.S. citizenship.
According to the official statement from the Tanzania Police Force, officers intercepted Ongeta at 12:00 hours (noon) as he was attempting to cross into Tanzania from Kenya. He was driving a Toyota Land Cruiser with the registration number KDP 502 Y.
During a search of the vehicle, officers discovered four (4) CS M68 hand grenade explosives in the possession of the suspect.
Allegations of Unlawful Possession
The Police Force underscored the gravity of the find, noting the immediate violation of domestic law. The press release stated unequivocally:
"According to Tanzanian laws governing the possession of arms and ammunition, such explosives are prohibited, and permission to enter the country with them cannot be granted under any circumstances."
The suspect, identified by his rank as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, is now being held as authorities proceed with a comprehensive investigation.

The Police Force confirmed that the collection of evidence regarding the allegations is currently ongoing.
